About this Event
"Slow Capitalism: The Interregnum, the Four Futures & the Confusion of Tongues" by Kenneth Williford
This talk considers the widespread claim that our current conjuncture is a bona fide Gramscian "interregnum", a period in which "the old is dying and the new cannot be born" and in which "a variety of morbid symptoms appear." It then discusses what Peter Frase has called our "four futures", each with identifiable seeds in the present.
Dr. Williford focuses on the subversion of communication-the construction of the precise opposite of Habermas' "Ideal Speech Situation"-that has been fostered by social media, our very own Tower and Library of Babel.
