Focus on Faculty: Gene Moo Lee

Join us for Focus on Faculty featuring the research of Information Systems assistant professor Gene Moo Lee, noon-1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 26 in the Central Library sixth floor parlor. Big Data is transforming the industry landscape. Businesses are building analytics capabilities to make data-driven decisions in the dynamic environments. However, recent reports indicate that 80-90% of the data comes in unstructured formats. This is a challenge that firms are facing. Dr. Lee's main research agenda is to transform unstructured and structured data into high-level insights using machine learning approaches and econometric models. In this talk, he will present two of his recent works in advancing Big Data Analytics. The first paper proposes a novel business proximity measure based on a text mining approach called topic modeling, collecting information about 150,000 high-tech companies from CrunchBase, a “Wikipedia” for venture industry. The second paper focuses on social media analytics. Brands actively use social media to communicate with their customers. Besides textual data, visual contents (e.g., photos and videos) play a critical role in social media marketing. The presentation will be followed by a light refreshments reception sponsored by The Honor Society Phi Kappa Phi.
