As part of Hispanic Heritage Month and the Pre-conference speaker at the 5th annual Hispanic Media Initiative Conference, The Center for Mexican American Studies presents Dr. Federico Subervi Vélez - Studying Latinos & The Media: Past, Present, & Future.

About the Talk:  Recognizing the rising influence of Latino communities in the United States, the lecture concentrates on four decades of scholarship on Latinos’ relationship with media, with a look towards the future. Drawing on survey research, Subervi-Vélez examines various aspects of the Latino media landscape, including visibility and representation issues in both English and Spanish-language media.

About the Speaker: Dr. Federico Subervi Vélez is a native of San Germán, Puerto Rico. He earned his BA and MA degrees at the University of Puerto Rico and his Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin, where he currently holds the position of Honorary/Associate Fellow of the Latin American, Caribbean, and Iberian Studies Program. He has served as a professor at four US universities, including California at Santa Barbara, Texas at Austin, Texas State, and Kent State. He has been a Fulbright Scholar in Brazil and Chile and a visiting professor at several universities in Latin America and in Europe. In 2018, he was selected as a Visiting Leverhulme professor at the University of Leeds. 

His most recent book, currently in process, is about political communication in Puerto Rico. From his home in Austin, Texas, he serves as co-editor-in-chief of the Oxford Encyclopedia of Race, Ethnicity, and Communication and is also working with Boricua Media to provide news and information options for the Puerto Rican population in Florida. In 2017, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists recognized his teaching, research, and community service by inducting him into the organization’s Hall of Fame.
