The Center for Mexican American Studies invites you to attend and participate in the roundtable discussion on “The State of Latino Higher Education in Texas,” with UTA students, faculty, staff, higher education experts, and members of the Texas Mexican American Legislative Caucus (MALC).

About MALC:

Founded in 1973, the Mexican American Legislative Caucus is the oldest and largest Latino legislative caucus in the U.S. By researching the implications of policy on Texas’ Hispanic communities, and by voting together, the Mexican American Legislative Caucus ensures that the interests of all Texans are represented. MALC’s educational outreach initiatives, conducted between bi-annual sessions of the Texas Legislature, strive to raise the level of Latino engagement in the Texas government and politics.

About our higher education experts:

Adrian H. Huerta, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Education in the Rossier School of Education at the University of Southern California, and a faculty affiliate of Project MALES at UT Austin. His research focuses on boys and young men of color, college access and equity, and gang-associated youth.

María Yareli Delgado, Ph.D., is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at UT Arlington, and co-coordinator of the Hispanic Serving Graduate Leadership Certificate. Her research focuses on women of color in leadership, community colleges, student access, and Latino populations in Hispanic Serving Institutions.

About the Roundtable: 

Among the topics we will address in the roundtable event are what it means for colleges and universities to be “Hispanic Serving Institutions,” the student matriculation and success “gender gap” between Latinos and Latinas, and strategies for community members to become actively involved in supporting Latinos pursuing a higher education.

The event is co-sponsored by the UTA Office of Government Relations and the UTA College of Education’s Hispanic Serving Leadership Preparation Graduate Program.
