The Center for Mexican American Studies Speaker Series Presents: Diego Esparza, "The Politics of Policing in Latin America: Comparing Colombia & Mexico."

In his recent publication, "Politics of Policing in Latin America: When Law Enforcement Breaks the Law," released in 2022, Dr. Diego Esparza, delves into the intricate dynamics of police centralization and professionalization and their impact on the prevalence of police malfeasance across Latin America. Through meticulous field research conducted in Colombia, Mexico, and Chile, Dr. Esparza gathered invaluable insights via elite interviews and meticulously traced the historical evolution of policing structures in each country. Dr. Esparza's groundbreaking research offers a comprehensive understanding of the nuanced interplay between policing frameworks and misconduct trends in Latin America, making his book an indispensable resource for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners alike.

Dr. Diego Esparza is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of North Texas (UNT). Prior to joining UNT, he served as an Assistant Professor of National Security Affairs at the Naval Postgraduate School. His research focuses on Latin American politics, policing, public security, intelligence, and civil-military relations, and his work has been published in various academic journals, including Social Science Quarterly, Comparative Political Studies, Politics, Groups, and Identities, and the Annual Review of Political and Military Sociology.
