The Center for Mexican American Studies invites you to the 2023 Journal of Mexican Studies/ Estudios Mexicanos annual lecture by Paul Julian Smith discussion on “Cinema, Television, and Streaming in Mexico: The Case of Manolo Caro.”

About the Lecture: This lecture begins with a short survey of the rapidly changing audiovisual field in Mexico, composed of the competing media of cinema, television, and streaming. It goes on to offer a study of Manolo Caro, a career movie director with a successful track record in Mexican romantic comedy feature films. Caro is best known as the creator of the comedy La Casa de las Flores for Netflix in 2018, and in 2020, he directed for Netflix and in Spain a period drama, Alguien tiene que morir. This talk takes La Casa de las Flores and Alguien tiene que morir as twin case studies to illuminate the current state of the audiovisual field in Mexico.

About the Lecturer: Paul Julian Smith, a Fellow of the British Academy, has been since 2010 a distinguished professor at the Graduate Center in the City University of New York. He was previously, for 19 years, the professor of Spanish at the University of Cambridge, UK, where he also took his PhD in 1984. He has been a visiting professor at 10 universities, including Stanford, NYU, and Carlos III, Madrid. He is the author of 25 books (translated into Spanish, Chinese, and Turkish) and over 100 academic articles in prestigious journals and edited volumes. He is a regular contributor to Sight & Sound, the monthly journal of the British Film Institute. He is the creator of an audiovisual essay on the Mexican film Amores Perros, included in the Criterion edition of 2020, and served as a juror at the International Film Festivals of Morelia in Mexico and San Sebastián in Spain.
