Join the Center for Greater Southwestern Studies for a book talk by Alice L. Baumgartner, author of South to Freedom: Runaway Slaves to Mexico and the Road to the Civil War.

Winner of the 2021 Caughey Prize for the best book on the history of the American West, South to Freedom tells the story of the “second underground railroad”—the exodus of enslaved people from Texas and the American South in the first half of the nineteenth century.

Baumgartner is an assistant professor of history at the University of Southern California.
