For this interdisciplinary exhibition, we present the intersection of art and science by featuring the work of Dr. Luke Frishkoff, Associate Professor of Biology, and Artist Documentarian Osra West. Through digital photography, paintings, and drawings, West brings to life the work of Frishkoff’s research on Evolutionary Ecology. This intersectional study of ecology and biology focuses on how environmental factors such as climate, food competition, and natural selection can influence a species’ evolution and, in this case, the anoles of the Greater Antilles islands in the Caribbean. Also on display are a series of vibrantly colorful beaded sashes of the Yoruba peoples of Africa that reference reptiles and showcase the cultural footprint of the Yoruba’s influence on the region.

Please join us throughout the fall semester, Tuesday, September 8, through Friday, November 13. The opening reception will be Thursday, September 10, 5 p.m.-7 p.m. We will host a Creature Feature event in collaboration with the UTA Herpetology Club on Wednesday, October 14, 12 -2pm.

Join the Maverick Mahjong Society and discover the fun, strategy, and community of Mahjong! Whether you have never touched a Mahjong tile or already know how to play, you are welcome to join us.

Learn to Play Series

We’ll kick off the semester with four guided learning sessions designed to take new players from the basics to confidently playing a game. Instructors will guide participants through each step:

October 6 | Mahjong 101
Start from the beginning! Learn about the tiles, basic terminology, setup, and the fundamentals of Mahjong.

October 13 | Mahjong 102
Build on the basics as we explore gameplay, creating hands, and making decisions during a game.

October 20 | Mahjong 103
Continue developing your skills, strategy, and confidence as you prepare to play more independently.

October 27 | Guided Play
Put everything together! Instructors will be available to guide tables through complete games, answer questions, and help players build confidence.

New players are encouraged to sign up for all four learning sessions so you can build your skills from week to week. Space is limited to 56 participants.

Open Play

After our learning series, the Maverick Mahjong Society will continue meeting throughout the semester for Open Play. Come practice your skills, meet other Mavericks, play a few games, and enjoy a fun break in your week. Players of all experience levels are welcome.

Money & Mind which will be held on:

This workshop will be led by Dr. Natalie Lundsteen, director of entrepreneurship education for Alloy Therapeutics. Lunch will be served to registered participants.

About the Speaker:

As Director of Entrepreneurship Education for the Alloy Foundation with Alloy Therapeutics, Natalie Lundsteen manages innovation education initiatives and programs, including Alloy Futures, a Dallas-based biotech startup academy supporting the growth and development of the North Texas life science ecosystem.

With a background in career and professional development for graduate students and postdocs, Natalie has taught, mentored, and advised students, postdocs, faculty and alumni at Boston University, Stanford University, Oxford University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, UT Southwestern Medical Center, Burnett School of Medicine at TCU, and the University of Rhode Island. She served as Assistant Dean for Career and Professional Development and Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at UT Southwestern for nine years and is co-author of ‘ReSearch: A Career Guide for Scientists’. She holds a Ph.D. in Education from Oxford University, where her research examined how people develop professional identity and align themselves with workplace settings. Her continued research interests include workplace learning and growing professional expertise, along with creating innovation education programs and resources.

Presenter Bio: Stacie Ellis is the registered dietitian at UTA, where she provides nutrition consultations and education for the students and staff on campus. Dr. Ellis is the proud owner of EXCELLIS Nutrition, a company geared toward performance nutrition, weight management, disordered eating, and medical nutrition therapy. She serves as a consulting dietitian for Wellness Concepts and Health Fairs Direct. She has been interviewed with PBS News Hour, Women’s Health Magazine, The Oak Cliff Documentary, and Texas Metro News. Ellis graduated with her Doctoral degree in Nutrition with a minor in Kinesiology at Texas Woman's University and she also completed the Certificate of Training in Adult Weight Management Program on June 4-6, 2015.

The one-hour session of Money & Mind invites students to reflect on how financial concerns can affect mental health, physical well-being, relationships, behaviors, and academic performance.

Money & Mind which will be held on:

Tuesday, October 13 at 6 p.m.;
Wednesday, October 14 at 6 p.m.
and Thursday, October 15 at 6 p.m.

Through guided conversation and mindfulness strategies, students will share their experiences, explore what has helped them manage financial, identify practical ways to manage finance-related stress, and connect with resources.

We’d love for you to join us at the Studio Art Center (810 S. Davis Drive, Arlington TX) for two days of glass and community:

Friday, October 16, and Saturday, October 17, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Each pumpkin is handcrafted by our students and faculty as part of a collective, community-building effort. Our inventory is made possible entirely through volunteered hours in the studio, so quantities are limited. Come early for the best selection—we’ll remain open for sales until we sell out!

Even if the pumpkins sell out early, live glass-blowing demonstrations will continue until 2 p.m. each day.

The event is free and open to the public. Most importantly, every pumpkin you take home helps support our students through scholarships, materials, and opportunities that help keep our glass program thriving.

For this interdisciplinary exhibition, we present the intersection of art and science by featuring the work of Dr. Luke Frishkoff, Associate Professor of Biology, and Artist Documentarian Osra West. Through digital photography, paintings, and drawings, West brings to life the work of Frishkoff’s research on Evolutionary Ecology. This intersectional study of ecology and biology focuses on how environmental factors such as climate, food competition, and natural selection can influence a species’ evolution and, in this case, the anoles of the Greater Antilles islands in the Caribbean. Also on display are a series of vibrantly colorful beaded sashes of the Yoruba peoples of Africa that reference reptiles and showcase the cultural footprint of the Yoruba’s influence on the region.

Please join us throughout the fall semester, Tuesday, September 8, through Friday, November 13. The opening reception will be Thursday, September 10, 5 p.m.-7 p.m. We will host a Creature Feature event in collaboration with the UTA Herpetology Club on Wednesday, October 14, 12 -2pm.

The UTA Fine Art Collections Gallery, housed within the Visual Resource Collections, Ste. 2109, Fine Arts Building, second floor. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. (as staffing is available).

For this interdisciplinary exhibition, we present the intersection of art and science by featuring the work of Dr. Luke Frishkoff, Associate Professor of Biology, and Artist Documentarian Osra West. Through digital photography, paintings, and drawings, West brings to life the work of Frishkoff’s research on Evolutionary Ecology. This intersectional study of ecology and biology focuses on how environmental factors such as climate, food competition, and natural selection can influence a species’ evolution and, in this case, the anoles of the Greater Antilles islands in the Caribbean. Also on display are a series of vibrantly colorful beaded sashes of the Yoruba peoples of Africa that reference reptiles and showcase the cultural footprint of the Yoruba’s influence on the region.

Please join us throughout the fall semester, Tuesday, September 8, through Friday, November 13. The opening reception will be Thursday, September 10, 5 p.m.-7 p.m. We will host a Creature Feature event in collaboration with the UTA Herpetology Club on Wednesday, October 14, 12 -2pm.

Join the Maverick Mahjong Society and discover the fun, strategy, and community of Mahjong! Whether you have never touched a Mahjong tile or already know how to play, you are welcome to join us.

Learn to Play Series

We’ll kick off the semester with four guided learning sessions designed to take new players from the basics to confidently playing a game. Instructors will guide participants through each step:

October 6 | Mahjong 101
Start from the beginning! Learn about the tiles, basic terminology, setup, and the fundamentals of Mahjong.

October 13 | Mahjong 102
Build on the basics as we explore gameplay, creating hands, and making decisions during a game.

October 20 | Mahjong 103
Continue developing your skills, strategy, and confidence as you prepare to play more independently.

October 27 | Guided Play
Put everything together! Instructors will be available to guide tables through complete games, answer questions, and help players build confidence.

New players are encouraged to sign up for all four learning sessions so you can build your skills from week to week. Space is limited to 56 participants.

After our learning series, the Maverick Mahjong Society will continue meeting throughout the semester for Open Play. Come practice your skills, meet other Mavericks, play a few games, and enjoy a fun break in your week. Players of all experience levels are welcome.

For this interdisciplinary exhibition, we present the intersection of art and science by featuring the work of Dr. Luke Frishkoff, Associate Professor of Biology, and Artist Documentarian Osra West. Through digital photography, paintings, and drawings, West brings to life the work of Frishkoff’s research on Evolutionary Ecology. This intersectional study of ecology and biology focuses on how environmental factors such as climate, food competition, and natural selection can influence a species’ evolution and, in this case, the anoles of the Greater Antilles islands in the Caribbean. Also on display are a series of vibrantly colorful beaded sashes of the Yoruba peoples of Africa that reference reptiles and showcase the cultural footprint of the Yoruba’s influence on the region.

Please join us throughout the fall semester, Tuesday, September 8, through Friday, November 13. The opening reception will be Thursday, September 10, 5 p.m.-7 p.m. We will host a Creature Feature event in collaboration with the UTA Herpetology Club on Wednesday, October 14, 12 -2pm.

Join the Maverick Mahjong Society and discover the fun, strategy, and community of Mahjong! Whether you have never touched a Mahjong tile or already know how to play, you are welcome to join us.

Learn to Play Series

We’ll kick off the semester with four guided learning sessions designed to take new players from the basics to confidently playing a game. Instructors will guide participants through each step:

October 6 | Mahjong 101
Start from the beginning! Learn about the tiles, basic terminology, setup, and the fundamentals of Mahjong.

October 13 | Mahjong 102
Build on the basics as we explore gameplay, creating hands, and making decisions during a game.

October 20 | Mahjong 103
Continue developing your skills, strategy, and confidence as you prepare to play more independently.

October 27 | Guided Play
Put everything together! Instructors will be available to guide tables through complete games, answer questions, and help players build confidence.

New players are encouraged to sign up for all four learning sessions so you can build your skills from week to week. Space is limited to 56 participants.

Open Play

After our learning series, the Maverick Mahjong Society will continue meeting throughout the semester for Open Play. Come practice your skills, meet other Mavericks, play a few games, and enjoy a fun break in your week. Players of all experience levels are welcome.

Dr. Johnson’s book is An ethnography on how both humans and javelinas can thrive in shared space. As human settlements expand into formerly wild lands, coexistence with wildlife is no longer optional––it’s a daily negotiation. In Living with Javelinas, Adam Johnson explores what it means to share space and adapt in a more-than-human world. Often mistaken for wild pigs, javelinas unsettle the boundaries between nuisance and neighbor. Johnson traces the other species that shape their lives––feral hogs, prickly pear, mountain cedar––and examines how folklore, perception, and memory influence human–javelina encounters. Drawing on ethnographic, ecological, and ethological research across Texas, he shows how coexistence becomes a practical, albeit often uneasy, conviviality.

In much of Texas, decades of hunting have made javelinas wary. Through extended time with rancher Roger Gray, who encounters and feeds javelinas daily, Johnson reveals how repeated contact can foster a mutually responsive relationship. Bringing anthropology into dialogue with ecology, Living with Javelinas argues that coexistence is not harmony but an ongoing adjustment. In a time of ecological strain, situated acts of accommodation point toward more ethical and sustainable ways of living together.

For this interdisciplinary exhibition, we present the intersection of art and science by featuring the work of Dr. Luke Frishkoff, Associate Professor of Biology, and Artist Documentarian Osra West. Through digital photography, paintings, and drawings, West brings to life the work of Frishkoff’s research on Evolutionary Ecology. This intersectional study of ecology and biology focuses on how environmental factors such as climate, food competition, and natural selection can influence a species’ evolution and, in this case, the anoles of the Greater Antilles islands in the Caribbean. Also on display are a series of vibrantly colorful beaded sashes of the Yoruba peoples of Africa that reference reptiles and showcase the cultural footprint of the Yoruba’s influence on the region.

Please join us throughout the fall semester, Tuesday, September 8, through Friday, November 13. The opening reception will be Thursday, September 10, 5 p.m.-7 p.m. We will host a Creature Feature event in collaboration with the UTA Herpetology Club on Wednesday, October 14, 12 -2pm.

We’ll kick off the semester with four guided learning sessions designed to take new players from the basics to confidently playing a game. Instructors will guide participants through each step:

October 6 | Mahjong 101
Start from the beginning! Learn about the tiles, basic terminology, setup, and the fundamentals of Mahjong.

October 13 | Mahjong 102
Build on the basics as we explore gameplay, creating hands, and making decisions during a game.

October 20 | Mahjong 103
Continue developing your skills, strategy, and confidence as you prepare to play more independently.

October 27 | Guided Play
Put everything together! Instructors will be available to guide tables through complete games, answer questions, and help players build confidence.

New players are encouraged to sign up for all four learning sessions so you can build your skills from week to week. Space is limited to 56 participants.

Open Play

After our learning series, the Maverick Mahjong Society will continue meeting throughout the semester for Open Play. Come practice your skills, meet other Mavericks, play a few games, and enjoy a fun break in your week. Players of all experience levels are welcome.

For this interdisciplinary exhibition, we present the intersection of art and science by featuring the work of Dr. Luke Frishkoff, Associate Professor of Biology, and Artist Documentarian Osra West. Through digital photography, paintings, and drawings, West brings to life the work of Frishkoff’s research on Evolutionary Ecology. This intersectional study of ecology and biology focuses on how environmental factors such as climate, food competition, and natural selection can influence a species’ evolution and, in this case, the anoles of the Greater Antilles islands in the Caribbean. Also on display are a series of vibrantly colorful beaded sashes of the Yoruba peoples of Africa that reference reptiles and showcase the cultural footprint of the Yoruba’s influence on the region.

Please join us throughout the fall semester, Tuesday, September 8, through Friday, November 13. The opening reception will be Thursday, September 10, 5 p.m.-7 p.m. We will host a Creature Feature event in collaboration with the UTA Herpetology Club on Wednesday, October 14, 12 -2pm.

For this interdisciplinary exhibition, we present the intersection of art and science by featuring the work of Dr. Luke Frishkoff, Associate Professor of Biology, and Artist Documentarian Osra West. Through digital photography, paintings, and drawings, West brings to life the work of Frishkoff’s research on Evolutionary Ecology. This intersectional study of ecology and biology focuses on how environmental factors such as climate, food competition, and natural selection can influence a species’ evolution and, in this case, the anoles of the Greater Antilles islands in the Caribbean. Also on display are a series of vibrantly colorful beaded sashes of the Yoruba peoples of Africa that reference reptiles and showcase the cultural footprint of the Yoruba’s influence on the region.

Please join us throughout the fall semester, Tuesday, September 8, through Friday, November 13. The opening reception will be Thursday, September 10, 5 p.m.-7 p.m. We will host a Creature Feature event in collaboration with the UTA Herpetology Club on Wednesday, October 14, 12 -2pm.

Join the Maverick Mahjong Society and discover the fun, strategy, and community of Mahjong! Whether you have never touched a Mahjong tile or already know how to play, you are welcome to join us.

Learn to Play Series

We’ll kick off the semester with four guided learning sessions designed to take new players from the basics to confidently playing a game. Instructors will guide participants through each step:

October 6 | Mahjong 101
Start from the beginning! Learn about the tiles, basic terminology, setup, and the fundamentals of Mahjong.

October 13 | Mahjong 102
Build on the basics as we explore gameplay, creating hands, and making decisions during a game.

October 20 | Mahjong 103
Continue developing your skills, strategy, and confidence as you prepare to play more independently.

October 27 | Guided Play
Put everything together! Instructors will be available to guide tables through complete games, answer questions, and help players build confidence.

New players are encouraged to sign up for all four learning sessions so you can build your skills from week to week. Space is limited to 56 participants.

Open Play

After our learning series, the Maverick Mahjong Society will continue meeting throughout the semester for Open Play. Come practice your skills, meet other Mavericks, play a few games, and enjoy a fun break in your week. Players of all experience levels are welcome.

Join the Maverick Mahjong Society and discover the fun, strategy, and community of Mahjong! Whether you have never touched a Mahjong tile or already know how to play, you are welcome to join us.

Learn to Play Series

We’ll kick off the semester with four guided learning sessions designed to take new players from the basics to confidently playing a game. Instructors will guide participants through each step:

October 6 | Mahjong 101
Start from the beginning! Learn about the tiles, basic terminology, setup, and the fundamentals of Mahjong.

October 13 | Mahjong 102
Build on the basics as we explore gameplay, creating hands, and making decisions during a game.

October 20 | Mahjong 103
Continue developing your skills, strategy, and confidence as you prepare to play more independently.

October 27 | Guided Play
Put everything together! Instructors will be available to guide tables through complete games, answer questions, and help players build confidence.

New players are encouraged to sign up for all four learning sessions so you can build your skills from week to week. Space is limited to 56 participants.

Open Play

After our learning series, the Maverick Mahjong Society will continue meeting throughout the semester for Open Play. Come practice your skills, meet other Mavericks, play a few games, and enjoy a fun break in your week. Players of all experience levels are welcome.
